Common Questions about Geotechnical Services in Sydney

How much does a geotechnical report or soil test cost in Sydney?

A professional geotechnical investigation by a qualified engineer starts from $1,200 for a standard AS2870 site classification, and ranges to $2,500+ for complex sites, full investigations, or rock coring work.

All laboratory testing is conducted through a Third Party NATA-accredited facility, so your report carries the same evidentiary standard as the major firms, delivered with the personal attention of an independent practice.

We review your site address and proposed works before quoting so you receive a fixed-fee scope with no hidden drilling extras. A precise scope upfront is also the best protection against over-engineered foundations downstream.

Do I need a soil test for a house extension, pool, granny flat, or knockdown rebuild?

Often, yes. Whether you are navigating a Development Application (DA) or a Complying Development Certificate (CDC), a geotechnical report or AS2870 site classification is commonly required. We provide the parameters your engineer needs for foundation design on Sydney’s reactive clay sites.

What makes SFGEO different from other geotechnical firms in Sydney?

Three things set us apart from both large multi-disciplinary firms and lower-cost express operators.

The engineer drills your site. Our Engineers, — not drilling subcontractors — are on the ground for every investigation. The person who signs your report is the same person who extracted the samples.

NATA-accredited lab data. All testing goes through third party NATA-accredited facility, to ensure no conflict of interest. Your report carries the evidentiary standard councils and structural engineers trust.

Local knowledge that takes years to build. We know Ashfield Shale, Hawkesbury Sandstone, and Bringelly Shale the way only a Sydney-based practice can. That local depth is in every report we write.

What is the difference between a site classification and a full geotechnical report?

A Site Classification (AS2870) primarily assesses how reactive (prone to shrinking and swelling) the surface soils are, which is used for standard residential slabs and footings (Class M, H1, H2, E, etc.). A full Geotechnical Investigation goes deeper. It involves drilling boreholes to assess the underlying soil and rock profile, providing the specific bearing capacities required for heavier or more complex designs like retaining walls, rock excavations, or deep piers.

What does a 'Class P' site classification mean?

'Class P' stands for a 'Problem' site, common in areas like Liverpool and Campbelltown. It means site-specific geotechnical advice is required for your footing design.
